Excellence in Learning Awards night

We are delighted to have been shortlisted for the Learning & Developing Awards in the Best Coaching or Mentoring Initiative. Our award submission included ‘The Innopharma Way’ which was received well. The awards night took place on the 22nd of September at the Killashee Hotel. It was a great night although we didn't win, we were in very good company among all short-listed companies, which was a broad mix of leading retail, FMCG, financial etc. from Ireland.  Here we are with the MC Marty Whelan, who still brings all the best Dad jokes and was really roasting some RTE colleagues who were in attendance.

We scrub up well !!!

AMTCE Collaboration

It’s not a name change but a correction of usage! We were incorrectly referring to our partner on short courses & micro credential programmes as the ETB. It’s the AMTCE (The Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre of Excellence) - yes we know it’s a mouthful!!. The purpose of the AMTCE is to provide training on state-of-the-art equipment and processes which will underpin the transition of Irish companies to industry 4.0 based operations. AMTCE only work with those in employment so anyone looking to join any of the courses must be employed & have an EU passport/Stamp 4 visa.

Skills Proposal 2023

In line with the European Year of Skills, Innopharma Education published a Skills Proposal to ministers and other decision-makers. We developed our proposal in partnership with industry and the higher education community, coupled with consideration of current government policy, the recent OECD report on Ireland’s Skills Strategy and the imminent EGFSN Report on the biopharma sector. A lot of hard work and time went into this document - thanks to all the team who were involved. Below is a snippet of the proposal.

Digital Maturity and Sustainability Assessment (DMSA)

The DMSA was developed to analyse the digital and green transitions underway in industry. Major manufacturing companies in Pharma and Med Devices have undergone the assessment since its launch to compare their current state with their future goals and to develop a holistic roadmap toward human-centricity, sustainability, and resilience. Through the Horizon Europe project One4All, InnoGlobal has deployed the DMSA to more industries across Europe – the Czechia manufacturing site of Orifarm, a parallel importer, and the olive processing and packaging plant Madama Oliva in Italy. The assessment process was extremely well received, validating the approach and model, ad giving us benchmarking for and valuable insights into other process industries, extending the applicability of the tool. The DMSA will be carried out at intervals throughout the One4All project as a measure of progress. Through this project we will also extend what the DMSA can capture and report – so watch this space!

Joining the Community of Practice Industry 5.0

InnoGlobal has become a member of the EC launched Industry 5.0 Community of Practice.

The Industry 5.0 Community of Practice (CoP 5.0) will bring together a broad range of European innovation ecosystem stakeholders to share good practices, co-create actions to implement Industry 5.0, contribute to the New European Innovation Agenda (NEIA) implementation, and provide a platform for members to network and establish new collaborations. It will help create a value proposition for stakeholders at the local, regional, national, and European levels to promote and apply Industry 5.0 principles and practices. It will facilitate an opportunity for stakeholders to share ideas, foster synergies, and receive support in transforming traditional business models into more impactful ones.

  • InnoGlobal will be involved in the co-development of a prototype diagnostic tool for Industry 5.0. This qualitative assessment visual tool will assist companies/organizations in evaluating their Industry 5.0 performance based on the triple pillars of human-centricity, resilience, and sustainability.

  • Horizon Europe application: InnoGlobal has led the submission of a Research Project [RENEW4AU] for the Horizon Europe’s call titled ‘Accelerating the green transition and energy access in Africa’. We led a consortium composed of 13 Members (6 EU Organisation and 7 AU organisation) comprising, HEI, SMEs and start-ups. The overarching goal of the proposal is demonstrating that the use of a user-centered microgrid renewable energy technologies is the enabler for building a revolutionary approach where users and more generally the local community’ well-being is placed at the core of the technology’s design paradigm. The proposal aims at leveraging new advanced technologies to create wealth beyond employment and development, all while keeping conscious of the planet’s production restrictions.

SmartWorkshops (formerly known as SmartLabs)

SmartWorkshops is a new offering for students of our digitalisation programmes – live remote workshops where learners can engage hands-on with topics in digitalisation and automation like industrial internet of things, data management, visualisation, storytelling, predictive analytics, simulation, automated process control and digital twins.

The unique selling point here is that it will allow students to gain valuable experience working with cutting edge technologies using real world data, generated in real-time from Innopharma’s own industrial processing equipment and process analytical technology from our QC lab in Sandyford, where students can interact with the physical equipment from anywhere in the world.

Key SmartX Updates this Quarter

Figure 1 - Screenshot of the SmartX HMI featuring improved data visualisations

Our SmartX technology received several major updates in the past quarter, all of which have added big improvements in the areas of security, performance and scalability.  Our most recent updates include:

  • Integration of InfluxDB timeseries database technology with the SmartX HMI which enhances the accuracy of data visualisations as well as faster performance and the ability to handle more data

  • A new multi-process Python script execution engine has been developed which greatly improves the safety, robustness and performance of our low-code / no-code process automation technology

  • Further enhancements to our MQTT IoT device support to improve security and cloud connectivity – these updates are being rolled out as part of SmartWorkshops

  • Migration of SmartX Cloud Apps to newer VueJS based user interface technologies – the legacy code has been replaced with more up to date technologies giving us the benefits of improved security and performance as well as making the code easier to maintain (and we have a lot of code in SmartX!)

Level 6 Pharma Labs Begin

This October & November we will facilitate, for the first time, the Level 6 Pharma Science labs for a total of 285 students onsite at Innopharma in both our Process and Analytical labs.

The labs will run over a total of 9 days. We are very busy preparing for kick off on October 31st. Exciting times ahead!

In September, Ian flew to Boston to meet with Congress to discuss important topics; Industry 5.0, Transformative Skills Initiatives in Africa and building medicine manufacturing capabilities in SSA. Matt Moran also attended these meetings! It was great to see such a high level of interest and support from the Congress.

We are delighted to introduce the newest members of our Team below:

John Mullaney

I am originally from Claremorris, Co. Mayo and currently living in Lucan, Dublin.

Most of my 3rd level education I have done alongside work – oh yes, that 6-10pm day-evenings and snoozy Saturday shifts, so it is a little bit unconventional. The main components were a diploma in electronic engineering at ITT, BEng via Open University and MSc Energy Management & Renewable Energy at DIT. There have been other shorter excursions too so do not be surprised if you bump into me at a Pharma related session somewhere along the way.

I have worked across several different sectors in my career to date including electronic equipment manufacturing, service engineering (medical & lab equipment), energy & sustainability management and PPP contract management. A lot of the companies I worked for no longer exist, which my wife likes to pin on me, but let me assure you it is purely coincidental. Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) and Vasogen are two consigned to dust while UDG Healthcare and Sodexo are doing quite nicely (she rarely mentions that!). Since completing the Advanced Validation Techniques course with Innopharma this Summer, I have been working as a Technical Writer at Grifols, Grange Castle. I’m part of a team of three Innopharma staff embedded in the Validation Department, working on a documentation project with a regulatory focus.

When not working I enjoy going outdoors cycling or walking. In my current role I can cycle to work – 20 minutes each way. I have always enjoyed working with wood, which includes collecting an annual supply for my wood burner and more recently making green wood furniture, particularly stools. (Tip-offs for wood supplies always welcome). But most of all, food is my #1 passion, thinking or reading about it, but especially tucking into something interesting. Right now, I am going through a Chinese phase figuring out how to work a wok without constantly setting off the fire alarm with ginger fumes.

Paula Curran

Hi, I'm Paula, I completed a degree in analytical chemistry. I have worked previously for Baxter healthcare and Schering plough. I am excited to be working with Innopharma with such amazing people & my role currently is Validation Technical writer at Grifols. My hobbies are tennis & I love to travel when I can.

Baby News

Congratulations to Mohammed Faheem Sajid, working as part of our team in Takeda, on the birth of his baby boy Yusuf 💙 Best wishes to you & your family.

New Starters

Isobel Hickey- Programme Co ordinator in Limerick

Hi all- I am absolutely delighted to be joining the team in the mid-west. I am no stranger to Innopharma as I started my journey as a student a few years ago completing the higher certificate and then going on to most recently completing the L7 BSC in Process Technologies. It’s great now to be on the other side of it and being able to support the students with my knowledge of what they are experiencing.  I am very excited to continue to grow in my new role and utilize my knowledge of the student experience to support them in successfully achieving their goals with Innopharma Education
