Skills for Biopharma: Researching and Forecasting the Current and Future Skills Needs of the Biopharma Sector in Ireland to 2027

Expert Group on Future Skills Needs (EGFSN) released their skills for Biopharma report in late April.
The Innopharma Group were delighted to be involved in the committee responsible for putting this report together. The future for Irish Biopharma looks bright which is a great sign for all Innopharma Divisions.

The main findings of the Skills for Biopharma report are:

  1. Employment has grown strongly in the Biopharma sector in Ireland over the past five years and is expected to continue to grow almost as strongly over the next four, with a forecast of more than 21,000 additional jobs being created by 2027.
  2. Average annual recruitment into the sector is forecast to be more than 5,600 out to 2027.
  3. A shortfall of 3,000 is projected between this demand and likely graduates entering the Biopharma sector, if nothing changes.
  4. A range of actions will be needed to address the projected shortfall. Many of these involve collaboration and cooperation between industry and the education and training sectors.
  5. Specific skills demand has arisen due, among other things, to changes in manufacturing technologies, the digitalisation of processes, the need for ongoing innovation and R&D, and the need to remain compliant with evolving regulatory requirements.
  6. Skills for the digital transformation of the sector are going to be very important, as are leadership and transversal skills.
  7. The sector needs to promote careers more effectively as well as develop new pathways into careers.
  8. Collaboration between industry and the education and training sector will be key to ensuring a good match between the demand for skilled workers and supply.
  9. The education and training sector must have the capacity to respond to skills needs articulated by industry and investment may be needed.
  10. Strengthening STEM education in schools is essential to underpin progress and future success.

The report makes ten recommendations under the following headings:

  1. Strengthening STEM Education in Schools
  2. Increasing the Capacity for Education and Training at Tertiary level
  3. Increasing Collaboration between Industry and Academia
  4. Promoting Careers in Biopharma
  5. Promoting New Pathways into the Sector
  6. Developing Leadership and Transversal Skills
  7. Growing Digital Skills
  8. Fostering an Environment of Diversity and Collaboration
  9. Accelerate the Development of Skills for ATMPs
  10. Developing a Skills Framework and Further Skills Mapping

Education Website Reaches New High

Ongoing improvements have been going on in the background with steady progress across our SEO (Search Engine Optimisation).

We have just reached a new milestone by becoming the highest ranking course provider on google for the term 'Springboard courses Ireland', being outranked only by Find a Course, Springboard, HEA, and other official/government websites.

Simply put, this means we are the first course provider people see when they search Springboard courses Ireland on Google. This kind of SEO result takes years to achieve and shows the work the marketing team have been putting in with our digital agency Wolfgang.

The team attended lots of events over the last 3 months, from canteen sessions to conferences, site visits and everything in-between!

1.
Anne Jordan at TUS Moylish Camp in Limerick with students attending their exams in May 2024 encouraging them to progress with Innopharma Education
2. L6 Progression now L7 BSc in Process Digitalisation Wojciech Parczyk - Student of the Year Award with Anne Jordan and Joan Toner.
3. Joan Toner, Anne Jordan and Claire McAuley  at Edward Lifesciences Shannon 30th of May 2024
4. Anne Jordan and Isobel Hickey at Stryker event on the 21st of June 2024
5. May 2024 exams in TUS Moylish left to right: exam invigilators: Fintan and Maria, Joan, Anne, Claire and Nora
6. Jekaterina Tarkojeva, Joan Toner and Esther Adcock (progression student) May 2024 exams at TUS Moylish Camp, Limerick

Goodbye Marketing Team

Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye to some fantastic marketing team members over the last 3 months.

Ciaran set the wheels in motion, leaving after an amazing 10 years with Innopharma! After getting married in December he and his wife are expecting a baby in October.

Lauren departed soon after, having worked with the team on and off for 5 years while she travelled Aus before coming home briefly and now setting up in London.

David has finished up after 2 years with the team. He is staying within Education and working not too far away, many were happy to hear!

Katy now finds herself replacing her replacement and is looking forward to welcoming the new marketing team over the coming months!

Food Fabulous Food

In April, Level 8 Food students presented their delicious food and beverage creations. This was part of one of their modules “Food Product Innovation” where students are put into grouped and tasked with creating a new and innovative food product right from product concept to launch. The assignments culminates in a group presentation and tasting. This year we had a variety of tasty treats from flavoured falafel, decadent vegan desserts, seaweed infused drinks and lots more.

PMTC Knowledge Day Keynote

Ian Jones along with Chris O’Callaghan delivered the keynote address on Shaping the future of global (bio)pharma manufacturing…through 5.0 lens at the PMTC (Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology Centre) knowledge day in the University of Limerick on May 30th.

These knowledge days are a great opportunity for academic researchers to present their results to members of the national and global pharmaceutical industry, as well as for industry members to provide guidance and input on research focuses, trends and challenges facing the industry. InnoGlobal’s position as a keynote presenter reflects our strong ties with both academic research and the leading position of our cutting edge technologies within the industry.

InnoGlobal Makes a Splash at ACHEMA 2024!

This year's ACHEMA in Frankfurt, Germany lived up to the hype! Twelve halls overflowed with cutting-edge processing technologies, attracting over 70,000 attendees from 127 countries. This was our fifth ACHEMA but was a particularly special one. We were thrilled to use ACHEMA as a platform to showcase the exciting new business ventures and services offered by InnoGlobal. It was fantastic to reconnect with our valued partners at ACHEMA. We also had the opportunity to meet new faces and forge promising new relationships. We're excited about the collaborations that emerged from the event.

BioPharmaChem Impact 24 Conference

The inaugural BioPharmaChem Impact 24 Conference hosted by Biopharma Chem Ireland (BPCI) on 21st of May last on the lovely grounds of Fota Island Resort drew support from all the divisions for Innopharma who as a silver sponsor provided an exhibition stand and several delegates. The event drew over 200 leaders from across the biopharmaceutical manufacturing and support industries and had 20+ expert speakers and panellists  covering global trends, the digital, AI and green transition, talent, competitiveness and so much more. Such events provide unequalled opportunity to both listen to and speak with industry leadership. A resounding consensus from the day, is that skills development remains a key priority for the sector to maintain competitiveness and the need to embrace rapid technological change.     Our very own Seán Costello who is a Board member of BPCI co-chaired the AGM where BPCI’s annual Responsible Care report was outlined. This is a report which describes the sustainability performance of the sector over the previous three years and shows how the sector is committed to making Ireland the Global Leader in Sustainable Biopharmaceutical and Chemical Manufacturing’.

ADAM

adam
Welcome Adam

Adam joins us after completing the validation programme this month and being placed in

Amgen Dún Laoghaire!

My name is Adam Reilly and I am originally from the village of Lahardane, Co. Mayo. I completed my Bachelors Degree in Medical Biotechnology from ATU Sligo last year. Thanks to the Innopharma Validation Internship, I have secured a role as Process Engineer at Amgen Dún Laoghaire!

Outside of work I love hiking and travelling, and I am also an avid reader. I'm really grateful and excited to be here!

New Starters

Welcome Áine

Áine Galvin joined us in late January as Programme Facilitator on the Validation Programme. She has a huge wealth of knowledge and experience with her to Innopharma from her roles both as a Senior Validation Manager and as a QP. Áine is part of the team that updates and delivers the training materials on the Validation Programme & is doing an exceptional job!

Welcome once again to the team Áine.

Áine holds 20+ years’ experience spanning the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry across formulation and aseptic fill finish (freeze dried & liquid), solid oral dose capsules and tablets, generic pharmaceutical manufacture, API Manufacture as well as inspection, primary and secondary packaging of same.

Áine’s early career encompassed QC analytical testing, method validation and technology transfer as well as regulatory submissions for New Product Introductions

(NPI). A curiosity across the multiple activities that spanned the lifecycle of a NPI while working in Melbourne Australia, prompted the completion of the MSc in Industrial Pharmaceutical Science in 2008 with RCSI/Sligo IT. This enabled Áine to perform Quality oversight of all these activities and act as Qualified Person for batch disposition to market on her return to Ireland.

A relocation from Cork (Gilead Sciences) to Dublin (Amgen Technology) in 2012 provided Áine with an in-depth knowledge of aseptic fill/finish and packaging facilities from construction through to commercial operations encompassing design, qualification, QC testing, QA oversight, validation as well as regulatory submissions and subsequent approvals to allow release to market.

Much of Áine’s career in Amgen encompassed Validation oversight and management/mentoring of a highly skilled and diverse team of validation engineers who specialised in commissioning/qualification activities, computer systems validation, sterilisation equipment validation, cleaning validation, aseptic process simulation (media fill), packaging and inspection validation as well as NPI validation activities including regulatory submissions for all new products.

Áine’s career has allowed her to work for a multitude of companies both locally and on the international stage, something for which she is very grateful for 😊
