Inclusive employment does not happen by chance — it requires structure, commitment, and meaningful partnerships. The Willing Able Mentoring (WAM) Programme, delivered by AHEAD Ireland, is one of the country’s most successful initiatives supporting graduates with disabilities to transition into paid, professional employment while helping employers build inclusive workplaces.
What Is the WAM Programme?
The Willing Able Mentoring (WAM) Programme is a paid, mentored work placement programme designed to promote access to the labour market for graduates with disabilities. Graduates can apply for roles with leading employers using their hard-earned qualifications, on a contract lasting between 6 and 10 months, with structured mentoring and ongoing support provided by AHEAD.
Importantly, WAM works on both sides of the employment equation:
- Supporting graduates to gain meaningful, career‑relevant experience
- Supporting employers to confidently embed disability inclusion into mainstream workplace practices
Benefits for Graduates with Disabilities
For graduates, the WAM Programme offers far more than a placement—it provides a supported pathway into sustainable employment.
Key benefits include:
- Paid graduate‑level roles exclusively ring‑fenced for graduates with disabilities
- Professional experience aligned to the graduate’s skills and qualifications
- On‑site mentoring and structured support throughout the placement
- A safe space to disclose and discuss disability‑related workplace needs
- Needs assessments and guidance on reasonable accommodations
- Increased confidence, networks, and employability
Many participants progress into permanent roles following their placement, demonstrating the programme’s long‑term impact on career outcomes. According to AHEAD Ireland’s WAM Programme statistics, up to 81% of graduates secure employment as a direct result of their placement.
Employers Who Have Taken Part in the WAM Programme
Over the years, the WAM Programme has partnered with some of Ireland’s largest public and private sector employers, demonstrating wide‑scale trust and engagement across industries. Some examples of employers involved in the WAM Programme are shown below:

Innopharma Education was invited to The WAM Leaders Awards 2022, where employers were recognised for their commitment to supporting WAM placements for graduates with disabilities. We were delighted to receive an award for our contribution to the WAM programme at this meaningful event.

Why the WAM Programme Matters
Since 2005, the WAM Programme has supported over 700 paid work placements for graduates with disabilities, with many participants progressing to permanent roles and career advancement.
The programme’s success is reflected in:
- Strong progression rates into permanent employment
- Increased awareness and adoption of inclusive workplace practices
- Positive outcomes for both graduates and participating organisations
WAM is not just a programme—it is a pathway to equitable employment and a more inclusive labour market in Ireland. Innopharma Education has first-hand experience with this mentorship programme and as a third level institute with students graduating every year and inclusive learner support resources, we want to highlight this opportunity to show that having a disability is not a barrier anymore – companies are more inclusive and accessible.
For graduates with disabilities, WAM opens doors to meaningful careers.
For employers, it provides the tools and confidence to build inclusive workplaces.
For society, it moves disability inclusion from aspiration to action.
