Galway has a significant cluster of medical device companies now employing in the region of 8,000 people locally. The west now accounts for 39% of the regional distribution of medical device employees in Ireland. New MedTech start-ups also
benefit from the cluster where the workforce and their level of experience and skill set are highly regarded.
Strong Growth
According to figures from IDA Ireland strong jobs growth is expected in the years ahead with an additional 4,000 jobs in MedTech by 2020. This optimism is reflected in recent market research we carried out here in Innopharma Education. Our research shows that over 91% of Pharma and MedTech companies in Ireland surveyed plan to hire
during 2017 and 2018. As expected with the concentration of manufacturing operations in Ireland 55% of our respondents’ companies are looking for skills in manufacturing operations and quality assurance. The drive for innovations
is also very evident however with demand for process development and validation skills also high with 55% of respondents saying they are planning to hire these skills in 2017 &2018. 84% of our respondents also see a requirement for business
skills such as business process improvement, decision making and presentation skills in addition to engineering or scientific qualifications.
Need for Skilled Labour
The continued growth of the Galway MedTech Cluster depends on the continuous development of a skilled labour pool. According to our research, the availability of appropriately skilled graduates is currently
the most significant driver required to sustain competitive advantage and 76% of our respondents stated there is a shortage of appropriately skilled graduates available to meet their recruitment and business growth needs. Over 66% also
stated that their minimum academic qualification required for new hires is a Level 8 Bachelors or Level 9 Master’s degree.
