Learn About Industry 4.0: The Guide

What Does Industry 4.0 Mean for People and Skills?

As we are in the middle of the fourth industrial revolution, we are going to see a change in how we work, live and how industries operate. Advancements in technology will change the traditional way of doing things. With Ireland’s strong biopharmaceutical presence, it is critical that we adjust towards this change to sustain our position. Apply now for our new Post Graduate Diploma in Digital Transformation (Life Science)  or check out our digital transformation industry guide to know more.

What is Industry 4.0?

Industry 4.0 focuses on Smart Manufacturing and Smart Technologies. Machines are going to be able to talk to each other, there is going to be more data created and we are going to have to have more artificial intelligence. This is an exciting time to be living in as more medicines will be discovered, and we will be able to discover those medicine in a quicker, safer and more affordable way. Automation will play a huge part in this shift however people will stay just as important as ever. Just because we have the technology to do something, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is the right thing to do. Skills are at the heart of the high-tech manufacturing revolution all across Europe and skills underpin any successful shift towards 4.0 technologies and the knowledge they bring.

How will it Impact Advanced Manufacturing in the Life Science Industry?

There is a strong manufacturing presence in Ireland. Ireland is one of Europe's largest Medtech hotspots and is a world-class centre of excellence with over 300 companies based here. 10 of the world's top 10 pharmaceutical companies are based in Ireland. To contain our high level of competitiveness, the life science sector must begin to adopt technologies that are seen as 'advanced' now, but that will be seen as normal very soon. The industry needs to be educated and informed of these new advances to meet the requirements of advanced manufacturing brought by the digital transformation.

Industry 4.0 will bring unprecedented levels of manufacturing efficiency which will lead to higher standards of quality, improved compliance with regulations and ultimately more success throughout the industry. As the standards of working change, we as people must gain the right skills to meet the advancements of the fourth industrial revolution.

What are the Skills Required for Industry 4.0 Advancements?

With those advancements over the next 10 years, through advanced manufacturing and Industry 4.0, It is important that people get the right skills aligned to those developments. The following skills will become essential over the next 10 years; to improve programming skills, to understand automation, how to connect machines together and how to analyse data.

At Innopharma we are dedicated to being a part of this transition and we are excited about the next phase for our Education division. We are taking all the ideas and the future and bottling them up into programmes to provide people with the necessary skills that help Ireland's workers get ready for that change. Right now, we have designed and developed an Advanced Manufacturing Masters that is launching next year. The Masters will focus on the new skills that will be needed to migrate machines and manufacturing environments in Ireland into the new age of Industry 4.0.
