Course overview

This modular course consists of three modules from the Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Device Technology & Business. The modules have been specifically selected to give learners the skills to secure advanced employment opportunities in the medical device sector. This course is funded under the Government’s July Jobs Stimulus Initiative and is free or subsidised (90%) depending on your employment status and other conditions.

This part-time programme is delivered 1-2 evenings per week and 1-2 Saturdays per month online. It is a QQI Level 9 programme (30 Credits) and delivered in collaboration with Griffith College Dublin. 

The course concentrates on key areas including industry and sector regulations, medical device technology, quality systems, medical measurements and analysis. It provides an opportunity to gain relevant and up-to-date industry knowledge in a convenient and practical timeframe.

This programme is suitable for those from engineering, science, quality, compliance, and healthcare backgrounds and are seeking to keep up to date with the relevant industry.

Modular courses are short and focused and will be offered in a flexible manner, allowing people to gain important skills without taking a considerable period away from the labour market. Each module will be stand-alone so that participants can gain skills and put them into practice immediately in the workplace. Modules are also accredited in such a way as to provide building blocks to a full qualification should the student so wish.

Course Outline

This part-time programme is delivered 1-2 evenings per week and 1-2 Saturdays per month online. It is a QQI Level 9 programme (30 Credits) and registration and induction will begin in December 2020. 

Module 1: Medical Device Technology

ECTS Credits: 10

This module explores the multitude of medical device types, technologies, platforms and classifications in existence today.  The module outlines the physiology and anatomy of the main body systems and provides an insight into the role of various technologies in the diagnosis and management of patients. The module also describes the medical device design and life-cycle process, with a specific focus on medical device manufacturing, drug handling, assembly, sterilisation, packaging, labelling, verification, validation and testing of medical devices.   

Module 2: Medical Device Quality Systems and Regulation

ECTS Credits: 10

This module explores the medical device regulatory environment and examines the core principles, concepts and rules governing medical device regulation with reference to the statutory frameworks under which such decisions are made. 

Module 3: Medical Measurement and Analysis

ECTS Credits: 10

This module researches the range and capabilities of medical device measurement devices currently available. It will outline the current techniques for human physiological, anatomical, biological and electrochemical measurement and analysis as well as discuss the challenges of data storage, data security and ethics relating to medical device data. 

Module 4: Career Progression Support

ECTS Credits: N/A

A key part of the programme is focused on providing learners with the necessary skills to advance their career opportunities. 

Entry Requirements

This course is suitable for those who possess qualifications at QQI Level 8 or higher in Science, Engineering, Quality or a related discipline.
