Course overview

This modular course is designed to equip learners with specialised knowledge and expertise in the field of emerging trends in medical devices, strategy, leadership & the culture of innovation, operational excellence & the science of innovation and professional and technical communications. These modules have been specifically selected to deliver the necessary skills to advance your career or secure employment in the medtech sector. This course is funded under the Government’s July Jobs Stimulus Initiative and is free or subsidised (90%) depending on your employment status and other conditions.

This part-time programme is delivered 1-2 evenings per week and 1-2 Saturdays per month online. It is a QQI Level 9 programme (25 Credits) and delivered in collaboration with Griffith College Dublin. 

This modular course provides an opportunity for individuals who wish to develop or further enhance their knowledge and expertise in key subject areas.  Developed with extensive input from the medical device sectors, this programme offers a unique blend of modules, providing learners with an opportunity to specialize and develop capability in a practical and convenient timeframe. 

This course is suitable for those with engineering, science, quality, compliance, and healthcare backgrounds and are seeking to keep up to date with relevant industry trends.

Medtech Students

Course Outline

This part-time programme is delivered 1-2 evenings per week and 1-2 Saturdays per month online. It is a QQI Level 9 programme (25 Credits) and registration and induction will begin in December 2020. 

Module 1: Emerging Trends in Medical Devices

ECTS Credits: 5

Challenges facing the MedTech sector, move towards value-based healthcare, growing regulatory pressures, resource constraints, product & process differentiating capabilities, growth initiatives, transforming cost structures and reorganising for sustainability, connected and combined smart medical devices, software-based medical devices. 

Module 2: Strategy, Leadership and the Culture of Innovation

ECTS Credits: 10

Current challenges of MedTech industry, strategic thinking in the industry, leading change, the culture of innovation, corporate governance and business ethics.

Module 3: Operational Excellence and the Science of Innovation

ECTS Credits: 10

Origins of operational excellence, operational excellence implementation models, lean sigma implementation, design for six sigma, science of innovation, TRIZ concepts, key performance indicators (KPI), quality function deployment.

Module 4: Career Progression Support 

ECTS Credits: N/A

A key part of the programme is focused on providing learners with the necessary skills to advance their career opportunities. 

Entry Requirements

This course is suitable for those who possess qualifications at QQI Level 8 or higher in Science, Engineering, Quality or a related discipline.
